The bathroom has evolved into a rejuvenating personal space that can do much to relax you and inspire you with its interiors. So no ignoring the significance of the décor whether the bathroom is big or small. Traditionally, bathrooms were not given much space as they were thought to be mere functional areas, but as they emerged to gain more importance, and even transformed into personal spas in some cases, the need to expand them arose. However, it is not always possible to earmark a good amount of area for the bathroom. But it can be made to appear expansive by using a few décor tricks like choosing the right colour palette and finishes for painting its interiors.
We spoke to an interior designer in Delhi to bring to you some ideas on how a small bathroom can be made to look larger.
Go for a calm or tranquil palette:
Small spaces can easily look cluttered and cramped. But by choosing a calm palette of pastels like baby blue, dusty pink, coastal blue, grey, silver, etc, you could create a tranqulising effect that imparts a spacious vibe.
Cool shades are hot:
The family of cool shades such as blue, green, etc, are not just cool colours literally, but figuratively as well, as they have been trending for quite some time – think teal, dusty blue or mint green.
Receding colours offer an illusion of space:
If you want to open up the room, the best colours to go for are receding colours like blue, green, blue/green, or blue/violet – they seem to go away from you. As a result, the space appears larger. The lighter shades of these colours are sure-fire enhancers of space.
A feature wall or a showstopper wall:
The wall that you face as you step into a bathroom can be the feature or show-stopper wall that will hold the mirror and the vanity, or it could be the wall opposite that is reflected in the vanity mirror. A feature wall adorned with a large mirror and complementary shade can increase a feeling of expansiveness. You could also use large mirror clad walls or a gallery of mirrors to both create design interest and enhance a feeling of space.
Black magic:
While black is believed to make spaces feel smaller, if used cleverly, it can work magic. Employ black in combination with silver or gold for a striking, and dramatic effect. The glossy sophistication is a heady, elevating feeling that makes everything feel light, airy and also expansive.
Reflective metallic shades:
Like glass or mirror, glossy reflective shades of silver, copper and gold can be used to enhance a sense of space and lux. Lustrous paints of this shade can give your bathroom a glamorous and open look. Don’t you already feel the floating effect?
Add neon freshness:
Use the cheerfulness of neon tints in combination with neutrals to add a zesty vibrancy to the bathroom. Yellow, green, blue or even pink in combination with white add a fresh contrast and brightness that aids in expanding a feeling of space.
Colour block for a power space:
Paint one wall or just one half of the wall (upper or lower) in a bright shade to make a statement with colour while keeping the rest of the walls neutral. This will add a dash of brightness as well as keep things light and airy. This way you have a chic design feature which also allows the room feel larger.
White or neutral shades: White or neutral shades may be the obvious choice to create an airy and light vibe in a space, but they don’t have to be boring or mundane. Use subtle textures and patterns with them to add interest to the scheme.
Work the vertical lines or tonal shades:
Vertical lines and patterns are used to increase an illusion of height, which also adds volume to the bathroom. By creating vertical lines with the same shade or using tonal differences you can create excitement as well as height which allows for a spacious feeling.
So, there are many tricks to create an expansive and calming bathroom that relaxes you and rejuvenates you. But you will have to choose the most suitable ones for your bathroom to make it reflect your style as well as make it appear larger.
